Autumn

Autumn casts a fiery sideways gleam

A sharp needle unpicking the seams of my hooded light

My fingers clutch the lifting veil

As the evening in my heart calls softly to winter

To the glow-subduing cool and the dark

But there is still the fattening moon in its lilac haze

The throbbing red trees

The stars

When each unpicked thread stabs startling light

I must live in the blazing autumn

And shed all the winter from my heart
