I’ve seen the Mona Lisa a few times (three? two? hazy), and each time I’ve felt like I was passing a celebrity on the street. Maybe you do this with celebrities too? Try to get a good look, while at the same time acting as if you’re not really looking at all. Much like a celebrity, she was surrounded by a tight crowd of clicking photographers. Much like a celebrity, she must see the world as divided between those who fawn over her, those who want to use her, and those who walk into walls pretending they’re not looking at her.
I can’t help but see her smile as a somewhat fond yet derisive ‘you utter idiots’.
