Fifty Shades of Grey is ‘mummy porn’?

First of all, did I miss something? Where did this book come from? It’s suddenly everywhere. Apparently it began as Twilight fanfic, which does not inspire confidence. To be honest, it sounds awful, but I can’t fairly comment without reading it. Dang.

Second, what is ‘mummy porn’? Putting aside unbidden visions of Egyptian mummies… Ewww, too late. But seriously, now that I’ve had a baby is the food I eat ‘mummy food’? Are the books I read ‘mummy books’? Many women in their thirties loved Labyrinth as kids. Is it now a ‘retro mummy film’? Maybe. I don’t know, I’m just asking.

Third, where is this demographic info coming from? Is there a huge population of frustrated mumsy ladies panting for some excitement in their love lives? The media is loving this angle. Or is it possible that it’s written mostly for a female audience and the prevalence of women with children reading it simply reflects the demographics for ebook buyers, who are mostly thirty plus?

Many questions, only one conclusion. Not looking forward to the film.

  1. It’s sounds like “mummy porn” is just a term coined by the media to put the book down. I don’t know if I’d agree with that, as I haven’t read the book either.
